The Perfect Couple Review 2024 Tv Show Series Cast Crew Online
Never judge a show by its first episode…but when you start the second episode with stiff flash mob as the opening credits the death knell is loud and clear.
The show has that tell tale Netflix glossy sheen that everything they produce has these days. While that doesn’t indicate quality it does lean the show towards the lackluster appearance of your standard network procedural. And that isn’t necessarily something I want from a highly publicized and presumably big budget production.
I knew the show was DOA when I heard the cacophony of poorly executed accents. I know that Nantucket accent falls into those hard to hear/let alone place East Coast accents. But it’s hard to be invested in the drama when an attempt at an accent prevents you from hearing the meat and potatoes of the scene. The accents were meandering at best and stiff as a board at worst.
While the characters who were cartoonishly leaning in to their singular character tropes (Thomas, Isabel, Det. Nikki, that one clearly coded gay whose name I refuse to learn) hammed it up in a fun vaguely theatrical way. None of the ensemble had any chemistry in the various pairings. While that aloof energy is commonly depicted in wealthy family’s, in the filial units themselves you’d at least see a nuanced emotional reaction. In the various “crying” scenes you won’t see a tear or smeared mascara. You will however see actors dying in their respective scenes.
From a technical standpoint there isn’t much to write home about. There is an attempt or two at a “cool transition” here and there (Liev Schrieber’s pupil fades into a poorly aligned headlight). A scene will be split into multiple shots for a single conversation in a nonsensical frenetic way. Beyond that the costuming/hair and makeup left me a bit confused. Why would some character’s foundation match their chest/neck but other’s wouldn’t. Why would you give your lead actress bras that clearly don’t fit? The men’s tailoring also left something to be desired (a better fit).
Nicole Kidman’s Greer says “I had an Agatha Christie obsession” and that’s clear. But what made Christie’s works like Poirot and Partners in Crime so successful were characters that came leaping off the page onto your screen. Sadly these characters leapt to their death into the Nantucket Sound.
