Review: A young man, Bradly, wakes up in his house with a deep and terrible wound on his head. In front of the mirror he begins to dress like a cowboy: hat, boots, shirt, etc, all the paraphernalia that anyone knows thanks to the seventh art. What in the most accommodating Hollywood could become a story of self-improvement, in the hands of the director Chloé Zhao becomes a meticulous and precious portrait of a boy who spends during the two hours of the film trying to say goodbye to his former life and trying to discover his new place in the world. Well now it’s time to revise the figure of the cowboy, even that masculinity out of step and wounded in today’s world, “attacked” by feminisms that have no chance of disappearing. And it is done inside a universe full of men, where the figure of the boy riding a horse is everything. The dialogues are masterful, but it is the images that Chloé Zhao creates that end up piercing deep, with Bradly riding one last time, savoring the wind, the tender moments with his sister, visits to the hospital to care for and encourage a friend who ended up much worse than him, or the scenes where you can only debate what future to take now that his life must be restarted. But he only knows how to be a cowboy …
Something inside Bradly breaks. And it will not return. No, it’s not Hollywood, not even that authorial cinema within the industry -it comes to my head The fighter , Darren Aronofsky- where there is room for a redemption or a final fight. The game, simply, is over. All the external, familiar and social impulses pushed him to be a cowboy, the best of all. But what does a cowboy do when he no longer has a horse to ride?
