Review: This show follows the life of two Mexican-American sisters, Emma and Lyn, from the Eastside of Los Angeles who couldn’t be more different or distanced from each other. Circumstances force them to return to their old neighborhood, where they are confronted by the past and shocking truth about their mother’s identity.
Being neither Latinx nor from L.A., I cannot speak to the accuracy of the character portrayals. BUT, as a person of color, I’m EXCITED to see this representation on the screen! There also seems to be the opportunity to address issues like gentrification, sexuality and cultural taboos, being proud of your identity when it can be easier to dilute the real you in order to fit in, etc. These themes, combined with the day-to-day relationships the sisters are cultivating and re-cultivating makes me hopeful for this show’s success. I’m also loving the food references, the switching between speaking Spanish & English, the soundtrack for the show – I feel like the show has been made with love for this area and its people, not malice.
