Kevin Hart & Chris Rock: Headliners Only starts much like the first comedy show of a night in New York. That is, a little slow and a little awkward. “This is a story about two separate journeys that go on two different paths but somehow align and end up at the same intersection at the top.” This clunky run-on is from Kevin.

The 82-minute show, though, glistens when treated as a deserved celebration of two great comedians, rather than an exploration and behind-the-scenes of their recent stadium tour.

The interviews are a lovely way to tell Chris’s and Kevin’s stories. From Chris’s brother Tony to Wanda Sykes, Kevin’s brother Robert, and Dave Chapelle, there’s a ton of great people to hear from. Keith Robinson’s appearance is a highlight. He was to Kevin Hart what Eddie Murphy was to Chris Rock: a Jedi, a wise mentor who provided a path to a mindful career. Robinson recently performed at The Village Underground. He was hilarious that night.

A slow start unfolds many opportunities to learn something new, chuckle at Kevin or Chris, or at least point and smile at the long list of guest appearances. This is, above all, a celebration of comedy. It’s hard for that not to be enjoyable for fans of the form or for those unfamiliar with the headliners.

The middle portions are the most captivating. Director Rashidi Natara Harper draws a line from the rise of Chris Rock to Kevin Hart’s come-up. The story paints a picture of the pure monolith that is the NYC comedy scene.

The doc loses some of its luster as it approaches the final show at Madison Square Garden. While it’s a flex to have Jay-Z backstage, the replay of the goat for the G.O.A.T. is a bit re-hashed.
