Based on the New York Times best-selling children’s book of the same name by Jessie Sima, the animated series follows Kelp, an ocean-bound unicorn. Raised in a family of narwhals, Kelp discovers other unicorns later in life. While initially believing they will need to choose between living on land with the unicorns or in the ocean with their narwhal family, Kelp decides to honor both parts of themselves by not choosing one or the other.

DreamWorks’ Not Quite Narwhal examines important concepts for children, including searching for one’s identity, acceptance, and working through their feelings. The series prides itself on its diversity, with characters including Riki, a music teacher with a prosthetic leg; Leroy, a non-verbal unicorn; and Theo, a narwhal with impaired vision. Not Quite Narwhal exists in a world without prejudice, with these differences sometimes being the key to helping their friends approach life from an alternate perspective. Not Quite Narwhal debuts on Netflix on June 19.

Juniper finally learns what a narwhal is after hearing about them from Kelp, and the younger sisters bond over being ignored by their older siblings. Juniper attempts to show Scallop a rainbow but admits her older sister, Pixie, was supposed to help her, while Scallop laments Kelp forgetting their plans to collect seashells.

Following in the footsteps of other beloved DreamWorks projects, Not Quite Narwhal can teach kids the importance of love, acceptance, and expressing emotions even when they are scary. The clip hints at a burgeoning friendship between Scallop and Juniper as they happily learn from one another and discuss difficult feelings. Not Quite Narwhal will continue to tell universal stories for kids to relate to and better understand some of the feelings they are dealing with on a daily basis.
