Grippingly intense and much-hyped new Swedish limited series, A Nearly Normal Family lands on Netflix this Friday.

The six-part series is an adaptation of the highly-acclaimed novel by Swedish author Mattias Edvardsson. Lauded for its gripping narrative as a psychological thriller, the Scandinavian noir is a compelling page-turner which should translate well to the screen.

Centred around the Sandell family – made up of priest Adam, lawyer Ulrika, and their 19-year-old daughter Stella – the narrative unfolds in the idyllic setting of a sanguine residential suburb outside Lund, Sweden. But their seemingly perfect life takes a drastic turn when Stella finds herself in custody, facing murder accusations.

The bewildered parents, Adam and Ulrika, struggle to cope with the sudden upheaval and naturally question what on Earth happened to lead them to this moment. Eager to assist Stella whatever it takes, they tackle head-on whether they truly understand their daughter – or even each other.

A Nearly Normal Family features Alexandra Tyrefors as Stella Sandell, Lo Kauppi as Ulrika Sandell, Björn Bengtsson as Adam Sandell, Christian Fandango Sundgren as Christoffer ‘Chris’ Olsen, and Melisa Ferhatovic as Amina Besic. Produced by Jarowskij, Sweden’s oldest production company, in collaboration with Anna Sofia Mörck (We Got This), the series is directed by Per Hanefjord (Hamilton) and scripted by Anna Platt (The Truth Will Out) and Hans Jörnlind (Top Dog).

The original novel has a healthy 3.8 rating on goodreads.com, with many praising how it forces the reader to confront the compromises we often make to be the people we believe our beloveds expect. Forum member Debbie posted: “A really good read. A fantastic character study. Great for people who want a meaty whodunnit or who want a good family drama.”

While Lindsay L said: “This book came with a lot of hype and it definitely lived up to it for me. There were several times I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong every single time which kept the thrill strong.”

Barbara said: “Fabulous story! It’s messy and full of well-intentioned acts that result in chaos. This is a story that questions each of us in how well do you know your child or your spouse. What would you do to protect the ones you love? Does your moral compass have grey areas?”
