Hubie Halloween 2020 Movie Review Poster Trailer Online

Director: Steven Brill

Writers: Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler

Stars: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen

Hubie Halloween, the next Adam Sandler-headlined Netflix film in fulfillment of the actor’s lucrative deal with the streaming giant, is imminently arriving on the streaming platform. Interestingly, the comedy not only provides vicarious celebration for a 2020 Halloween season likely to be squelched by the health crisis, but also showcases Sandler revisiting his character well of lovable imbeciles with quixotic missions, as teased in the first trailer

Appropriately set in the witchy hamlet of Salem, Massachusetts, the film centers on Sandler’s character, Hubie Dubois, a kind-but-eccentric local Halloween enthusiast, whose self-appointed role as a nebby safety patroller as earned him some derision. However, the threat of an escaped criminal and unexplained—seemingly supernatural—disappearances has turned this year’s fall holiday into an ordeal for the ever-vigilant Hubie, even in the face of incredulous authorities.

It’s immediately clear upon viewing the trailer that Hubie Halloween has Sandler—having recently achieved some newfound dramatic acclaim in last December’s Uncut Gems—back in a form that should please nostalgically-driven fans of his 1990s turns in Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, etc., seeing as he’s playing a character that’s arguably an amalgam of those heyday hits; a character defined by quirks (e.g. a Batman-grapnel-like retractable thermos,) and is faced with a crisis that only he can tackle, despite being absurdly out of his depth. Sandler’s Hubie is also prone to absurd frights, rendering him a tailor-made foil for the film’s Halloween hijinks.

Driving home Hubie Halloween’s classic callbacks, Sandler’s Hubie has been put opposite a prospective romantic interest played by none other than Julie Bowen, facilitating a welcome onscreen reunion with the actress whose character, Virginia Venit, famously fulfilled that very function for Happy Gilmore back in 1996. Additionally, in a typical fashion for a Sandler comedy, the film is filled with an obscene array of supporting roles and cameos from high-profile personnel (and an obligatory crop of SNL alumni,) consisting of names like Ray Liotta, Michael Chiklis, Peyton List, Steve Buscemi, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph, Rob Schneider and (since it’s a Netflix film,) Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp.

Steven Brill was in the director’s chair for Hubie Halloween, continuing a collaborative relationship with Sandler after having directed his theatrically-released films, Little Nicky and Mr. Deeds, later fielding the star’s Netflix releases in The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler and stand-up/concert special Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh. Brill also directed non-Sandler films such as Heavyweights, Drillbit Taylor, a segment from comedy collaboration Movie 43 and Walk of Shame. He works here off a script that Sandler co-wrote with his longtime collaborator (going back to his SNL days,) Tim Herlihy.
